The crowd here is a lot bigger than I expected. The papers have done my job for me and I didn’t even have to pay them for it. Pelos is so excited he is having problems keeping calm. That boy is too much like his mother. I need to have Hulthen get out my mourning clothes. I think the boy’s mother is only going to last maybe another week, less if I give her an extra dose.

Ah yes, Lord Judda is just wrapping up. My time to shine. Lord Judda calls me up to the podium, the people cheer as I take the space he vacated. Pelos stands next to me, managing to look suitably sad for all that his latest favorite is in the front row.

"I know it is a difficult thing to believe that the ones entrusted so long ago with protecting us would turn on us. And I don't believe they have. They are tired and misunderstood and have had the pressure of ruling for far too long. No person or persons were meant to be in charge of our little continent, barely big enough to escape being called an island, for so very long. But they have done it. They haven't had the time to change, they have a way of doing things and that is it. They are still operating from an ancient worldview. Which is why when they realized that poor Valdís had gone home to be wed they responded the way barbarians would, with violence.

I don't condone what they did but I understand where it came from. And really, Pelos and I, we just want our Valdís back home, safe and happy with her new family. We want to take care of our sweet but confused girl. Her poor mother is even more worried, but with the recent death of her husband, she hadn't even had time to mourn when Valdís went missing. We both still have our questions as to how that happened. However, none of it will matter if we can just get my soon to be daughter back safe. Thank you all for your support, I can only hope the kings will hear our pleas and be moved to act in a way that displays their humanity."

I step back and allow Pelos to add his well planned thoughts to the matter for the crowd. As he regurgitates the speech I made him practice until he could recite it backwards I study the crowd. Women are crying, husbands and fathers look angry. Sons around marrying age appear ready to fight for Valdís's honor. This is going so much better than I could have imagined.

Pelos wraps his plea for his future bride to be let to come home and the crowd cheers, it's like thunder rolling down the mountain. There is no way the kings will be able to ignore this.
